Free tours on the Glacier
- Tours to the Glacier Crevice: every Monday to Friday, at 11:00, approx. 40 min.
There are free tours on the Glacier Trail every Monday to Friday from July until September. The meeting point is on the sun terrace of the Weißsee-Restaurant.
Tours only take place in fair weather. Do not forget appropriate shoes and sun cream!
Hiking tips along the Glacier Road
- You will find this and other hiking tips, in addition to other excursion destinations in the Kaunertal Valley summer brochure.
- You can get hiking maps at the Glacier Shop, the Tourism Association offices or in the hotel receptions.
Lake Gepatsch Resevoir
is the highest natural dam in Europe. The reservoir is 6km long, and has a volume of 140 million m³. This natural dam has a wall length of 600m and lies 160m above the valley bottom.
Hiking to the Nassereinalm
(open for service). The hike begins approx. 1,5 km on the reservoir’s western edge, it last 1-1,5hr; an additional hiking opportunity is over the front of the Kaiserbergtal Valley to the Gepatschhaus Cabin (open for service).
Hiking through the stone pine forest
to the hunting lodge “Hapmes Boden”. This hike begins approx. 3km on the eastern edge of the reservoir, approx. 1,5hrs in length, with another hiking option along the Höhenweg Trail, over the Wurmetal Valley to the Gepatschhaus (open), approx. 6hrs.
Gepatschhaus Cabin
(open for service). With the New Gothic wooden chapel, called "Maria im Schnee" (Maria in Snow), built in 1894 for the mountain guides who would never undertake a high alpine hike without first going to mass.
Climbing garden "Fernergries"
The climbing garden was set up by mountain guides, with 27 routes having difficulty levels from 3 to 7.
Mountain hike to Rauhekopf Hut
3,5hrs. in length. This is only performed with mountain climbing gear! DAV cabin open for service in the section Frankfurt
Panoramic viewpoint at Schnappsloch
between turns 12 and 13 on the rugged glacier tongue of the Gepatschferner Glacier.
Nature trail
Hike to the glacier river (worthwhile seeing) and to the Gepatschfern Glacier fork. 2hrs. in length and accompanying brochures for the nature trail are available at the Tourism Association in the Kaunertal Valley.
Hiking trail to Lake Seeleseen
0,5hr. in length. The almost level trail leads to 2 glacial lakes, with crystal clear water, tadpoles and waterfalls, which is ideal picnic spot for a family excursion!
Hiking to the 3-Country View
Duration 1,5h. This tour offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Bernina Group (CH), the Ortler Massif (I) and the Ötztal Valley Alps with the Weisseespitze Mountain (A).
